History Right Now: Barack Obama is the President of the United States

Obama greets the mass after victory (Brad Warthen's Blog)

Barack Obama’s monumental win is being portrayed as just that. History has potentially taken a favorable turn toward equality. Our country cast its prejudice aside and elected an African-American president.

Obama is being portrayed as the savior in the media right now. There were parties in mass following his victory and there was a distinct buzz of joy in the air.

There is a question that still lurks underneath the surface of this momentous victory. Can he do it?

Obama would not only say yes I can, but “Yes we can.”

He displays the confidence and swagger of someone who has lead a country for years. His inexperience is not a flaw, he is very aware of his short comings and has promised to surround himself with an intelligent cabinet, designed to account for his weaknesses.

The media still appears to be very fixated on Sarah Palin. It is not yet clear to me why. She poses no further threat to our country and will continue to govern a state on the other side of Canada.

Yet the media will not divert the blame from her. They have pinpointed her as the reason for McCain’s demise. While she certainly didn’t help, I don’t think she could have prevented Obama’s colossal quantity of electoral votes.

A week has passed and the country may be starting to settle back into a state of normalcy, while every news station continues to furiously discuss this ongoing hot topic.

Unfortunately speculation won’t carry very far. The next four years may change the United States as we know it. It all hinges on the truth of those three words. “Yes we can.”
